YEAR END ISSUE ARRIVES IN FOUR WEEKS!!!

Hello all you good soldiers. I mentioned for the first time last week that I’m starting to accept submissions for this year’s kMNR Year End Issue, scheduled to be published on December 29th, and I’ve already received one submission (you know who you are, and THANK YOU!). I encourage you to send me an email with your selection for album and concert of the year with a short blurb as to why you picked who you picked. Don’t delay, send today!

Also, we are now in negotiations with a Calgary bar to host kMNR’s 100th issue party the following week. Stay tuned right here for details to come soon!

Halifax’s Wintersleep Moves Us Both On Stage and Disc

Halifax, Nova Scotia’s Wintersleep have been playing live since April 2002 and their performance at Broken City on November 25th proved that nearly four years of hard work make for a good live show. Their self-titled full length release is just further proof of that.

Oddly enough, this maritime quartet (Paul Murphy, Tim D’eon, Loel Campbell and Jud Haynes) fool you with their often mellow style, both on stage and on CD. However, as their songs progress you are drawn into the beauty of the music. It’s quite compelling; by the end of the songs, you find yourself enthralled. Songs like Migration (which contains a fantastic yet simple bass line) take that even further by throwing in some ‘la-la’s in the song that translates nicely on both mediums. On stage, the whole band practically stops to sing and those in attendance had no choice but to join in. It was during this song that drummer Campbell really captivated me with his emotional yet nearly violent pounding.

Now, you’ll often find when witnessing the live performance of a previously unknown act that their recorded material doesn’t quite add up. With Wintersleep, this is far from the truth. All the songs from the CD that were played live are just as impressive. The disc starts with Lipstick and lead single Jaws of Life, two songs with a lot more punch to them than songs like Insomnia. The album closes with People Talk which although very mellow, has a haunting beauty to it’s simplicity. It’s almost as if this song belongs in a movie soundtrack at an emotionally crucial point in the story.

Although Migration tends to be one of my favourites songs because it captures the same feeling it did live, I have to highlight two other songs before I wrap up. Danse Macabre is another song that balances the rocking with the slumbering on this disc. However, I’m a sucker for the crescendo and Nerves Normal, Breath Normal ropes me in like few others. Plus the song’s just as great on CD as it was live so I get to relive that moment any time I want.

The only odd thing about the CD is the booklet which contains a story of a boy who loses his heart. It’s very peculiar and is obviously tied to a (or possibly THE) theme of the album. Maybe the more I listen, the better I’ll be able to understand the relation.

Speaking with bassist Haynes afterwards, he indicated that they want to return again in the new year but not to expect them until at least March since they simply don’t want to deal with the cold of the prairies. Honestly, I can’t blame them. Keep an eye out for more information on this band in the future.

“Give Me My Money Back You Bitch”

This past January, drummer Ryan Vikedal was fired from Nickelback. Now, Chad Kroeger is sick of Vikedal collecting royalties from the band saying that he is the sole author and “maker” of the band’s songs. So he took his production company Arm Your Dillo Publishing Inc. (I know, I thought that said ‘dildo’ too!) and filed a law suit against Vikedal in BC’s Supreme Court. He even wants the ex-drummer to pay back any money he received since the beginning of the year.

With Kroeger being this mad, you’d think Vikedal banged his girlfriend or worse; his mom!

From The “Who Gives A Fuck” Department

Take a seat before I break this unfortunate news to you; Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson have ended their three year marriage. Hey, maybe Bam Margera can start banging her legitimately now!

I think it’s pretty hilarious that before their MTV Newlyweds fame Nick was more popular than Jessica. Eh, he had no business having that kind of fame anyway.

Stones To Satisfy Super Bowl Crowd During Half Time

The NFL announced this week that the Rolling Stones will perform during this season’s Super Bowl half time show. Super Bowl XL (that’s 40 kids) takes place on February 5th, 2006 at Ford Field in Detroit.

Unless Keith Richards does a bump off his guitar neck or Mick Jagger whips out his junk, there shouldn’t be that many complaints to the FCC this time around.

Are You Using the ‘Devil Horns’ Inappropriately?   An Onion Report

A recent report on The Onion states that the use of the metal hand gesture is becoming grossly overused and often in inappropriate situations. Read the shocking report here.

In Stores Next Week

Apparently, Dave Matthews Band’s double live CD/DVD didn’t come out this week as I reported last week. Hopefully, you can find it next week.

Aside from that there aren’t that many noteworthy releases hitting store shelves December 6th. You could be happy if you want what is potentially the last release from white-rapper Eminem. I reported earlier this year that he decided to end his rapping career in pursuit of a producing gig. So, it’s appropriate that this last release be Curtain Call: The Hit, a two CD collection. Or maybe you’d like to get A Little More Personal with actress turned singer (and I use that term loosely) Lindsay Lohan. Hey, didn’t I see her breasts pop out on the internet somewhere?

KoRn is back with an album of new material titled See You On The Other Side, which to me indicates some sort of ending. I don’t know if that was intended for the reason that they may be finished soon, or if it’s just part of a theme of the album. Either way, if you’re a huge fan of the band you’ll probably want to get the collector’s edition of this album as it includes deluxe packaging with a die-cut pop up of the album cover and a bonus disc among other goodies. From the sounds of the web site, this album sounds appropriately heavy.

Maybe KoRn isn’t heavy enough for you. Maybe you want the blistering German-metal sounds of Rammstein. Well, aren’t you lucky because they’re releasing Rosenrot here next Tuesday. Just try not to scare the holiday shoppers when you arrive at the record store wearing your black leather bondage outfit screaming “ICH WILL DIE NEUE RAMMSTEIN AUFZEICHNUNG BITTE!!!”

Chart's Weekly CD Release Reviews

Ah, the holiday season…peace, love and shopping! Not quite sure what to get that special someone? Why not give them the gift of music? You know, it is the gift that keeps on giving, right? Before you run out and buy just anything though, make sure to check out what the Chart Magazine staff had to say about such releases as SOAD’s Hypnotize and QOTSA Over The Years and Through The Woods (both of which they are pretty much bang on about), Limp Bizkit’s Greatest Hitz and Switch from INXS (sadly, they’re pretty bang on about these two as well) and many more. Enjoy!
