Album Review: Dryrun ~ All Fear Aside

Posted by JonesK On June - 16 - 2010

Written By: Kristen Jones

After over a year of recording, Winnipeg Hard Rock/Metal band Dryrun, has released their first full length album titled All Fear Aside, on May 29th.

Formed in the summer of 2007 Dryrun consists of Josh Pereira (Vocals), Cory Pereira (Guitar), Matt Bileski (Drums), Jeremy Jost (Guitar) and Calvin (Bass).

Though relatively new to the metal scene, the band has had the opportunity to play with a number of local Winnipeg acts, as well as many touring bands passing through the city.

Dryrun’s energetic stage show and dedication have set them apart from others in the genre.  With a mix that sounds like the best of Bullet For My Valentine, Finger Eleven and Godsmack, this is sure to be only the beginning for the band.

Dryrun puts just as much emphasis into their marketing as they do their music and it shows with the release of All Fear Aside.

The album is very well done, with songs that are catchy but at the same time shows the bands skills and talent.  Songs you don’t want to miss include “Deceit”, “Stand Tall” and my personal favourites “Run _ Hide” and “Truth In Whispers”.

What can we expect from Dryrun in 2010?  The band hopes it to be their busiest year so far.  Along with the release of All Fear Aside, the band will be touring Eastern Canada to promote the album and concentrating on getting their name out there.

Follow Dryrun on their Facebook and Myspace pages.

Video of the Day: the Weakerthans ~ “Sun in an Empty Room”

Posted by cristóvão On October - 4 - 2009

the WeakerthansHave you ever had one of those bands that you know maybe two or three songs, and like them quite a bit but have never really invested much more time or research into them? The kind that are quite worthy of attention but for some reason have never left the back-burner? For me, the Weakerthans is one of those bands and it’s certainly not for lack of talent.

The four-piece from Winnipeg, MB are famous for their fusion of indie-rock, folk and punk and since their inception back in 1997 have released five records (one of them an EP) including the 2007 album Reunion Tour. Having signed with punk label Epitaph in 2003, the last two records are on that label and have afforded them increased exposure.

Although the group have been taking some much needed down-time before embarking on recording their next album, singer/song-writer John K. Samson recently announced that he was going to record a number of 7″ solo  singles about Manitoba roads through Epitaph. The first single, “City Route 85″ is set to come out on October 20th.

My absolute favourite Weakerthans track is from their last album and is called “Sun in an Empty Room”. This week, Epitaph added it to their YouTube channel and it’s an absolutely stunning video;

Now, here’s a small tid-bit of info/trivia some people may not know about the Weakerthans; Samson is formerly of punk band Propaghandi.

The Tragically Hip continue to add dates to their North American tour in support of their new album, We Are the Same. They’ve added a fourth show in Winnipeg (sorry, no pre-sale password for that…yet WE NOW HAVE THE WINNIPEG PRE-SALE PASSWORD! SEE BELOW!) and now a sole show in Abbotsford, BC on August 8th.  Being a suburb of Vancouver (who already have three shows in June), this makes a total of four shows in the lower mainland B.C. area for Hip fans to check out what will prove to be an amazing show. Not surprisingly, Toronto tops the list of most shows with a six-night stint at Massey Hall starting next week.

This tour, dubbed An Evening with the Tragically Hip, features no supporting acts. The band will perform for well over two hours split into two sets (much like they’ve done in the past, noteably in 2000 in support of that year’s album, Music at Work).

Here are the pre-sale details for the newly added Abbotsford show;

An Evening with the Tragically Hip @ the Abbotsford Entertainment _ Sports Centre in Abbotsford, BC on August 8th, 2009. Pre-Sale runs from 10:00 hrs to 22:00 hrs Pacific Time on Friday, May 8th. Password is “courage“.

An Evening with the Tragically Hip @ Centennial Concert Hall in Winnipeg, MB on September 7th, 2009. Pre-Sale runs from Thursday, May 7th at 10:00 hrs until Friday, May 8th at 22:00 hrs Central Time. Password is “live“.

Things start off in Montreal on June 15th with stops in Toronto (June 17th), Kitchener, ON (June 18th), London, ON (June 19th), Thunder Bay, ON (June 21st), Winnipeg (June 22nd), Regina (June 23rd), Calgary (June 24th), Edmonton (June 26th), Kelowna (June 27th) and Vancouver on June 28th.

The only U.S. dates at this time are Seattle (June 29th), Portland (June 30th), Petaluma, CA (July 2nd) and Los Angeles on July 3rd. Pre-sales for all shows can be found through the CKY Alliance web site.
